وبمواكبة هذه المسيرة الديمقراطية، وطبقا لما قاله فخامة رئيس الجمهورية، السيد معاوية ولد سيدي أحمد الطايع وهو أننا:

Thus the Mauritanian people are daily consolidating the foundations of their young democracy, which in the words of the President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya, is the mainspring " of all sovereignty and legality " .
وهكذا فإن الشعب الموريتاني يرسخ يوما بعد يوم دعائم ديمقراطيته الناشئة بعد أن أصبح وفقا لما قاله فخامة رئيس الجمهورية السيد معاوية ولد سيدي أحمد الطايع مصدر السيادة والشرعية.

The repression organized by the Taya regime against Mauritanian citizens of black African origin, accused of " sénégalité " , led to the expulsion or flight of tens of thousands of Mauritanians to Senegal and Mali.
وأدت الحملة التي شنها نظام ولد الطايع ضد مواطنين موريتانيين من أصل زنجي - أفريقي، اتهموا ﺑ " هويتهم السنغالية " ، إلى طرد وهروب عشرات الآلاف من الموريتانيين إلى السنغال ومالي.

7. On 3 August 2005 a coup d'état led by Colonel Ely Ould Mohamed Vall overthrew the Taya regime after more than 20 years in power.
7- وفي 3 آب/أغسطس 2005، وضع انقلاب بقيادة العقيد علي ولد محمد فال حداً لأكثر من عشرين عاماً من حكم الرئيس ولد الطايع.

13. On 7 and 8 November, the Secretary-General was received in Nouakchott by the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Maaouya Ould Sid’Ahmed Taya, and met with the Prime Minister and other senior officials of the Mauritanian Government.
٣١ - وفي يومي ٧ و ٨ تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر، استقبل اﻷمين العام في نواكشوط من قبل معاوية ولد سيدي أحمد الطايع رئيس جمهورية موريتانيا اﻹسلامية، واجتمع مع رئيس الوزراء، ومع كبار المسؤولين في الحكومة الموريتانية.

With this new achievement, the Mauritanian people will confirm that it has become, as stated by His Excellency President Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya, “the source of sovereignty and legality” and the master of its own destiny and affairs.
وبهذا المكسب الجديد يعــزز الشعب الموريتاني تحكمه في مصيره وتسيير شؤونه بنفسه في ظل دولة القانون مصداقا لما قاله فخامة الرئيس معاوية ولد سيدي أحمد الطايع من " أن الشعب أصبح مصدر السيادة والشرعية " .

“It gives me pleasure to address the Assembly on this memorable occasion on behalf of the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, His Excellency Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya.
" انه لمن دواعي الغبطة والسعادة أن أتوجه بهذا الخطاب الى هذا الجمع العالمي الموقر، باسم رئيس الجمهورية اﻹسلامية الموريتانية، فخامة السيد معاوية ولد سيد أحمد الطايع.

That policy took a dramatic turn when Colonel Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya took power, and Halpular officers were executed in 1987, followed by a wave of arrests and the demobilization of thousands of Halpular soldiers, who were accused of trying to overthrow the Government.
وأخذت هذه السياسة منعطفاً خطيراً مع وصول العقيد معاوية ولد سيدي أحمد الطايع إلى الحكم في عام 1987 وإعدام ضباط من الهالبولار، وهي عملية تبعتها موجة من الاعتقالات وتسريح الآلاف من الجنود المنتمين إلى نفس المجموعة العرقية، الذين اتهموا بالتآمر لقلب نظام الحكم.

That position is in contrast to the attitude of complete denial at the highest level of the State in the past, as evidenced for example in 1997 when President Ould Taya stated that those who raised the issue of slavery were only trying to tarnish the country's image and must be linked to a group previously involved in an attempted coup d'état.
ويندرج هذا الموقف في منظور ينأى عن موقف الإنكار التام لهذه المسألة في الماضي على مستوى قمة هرم الدولة، كما يتضح من كلام الرئيس ولد الطايع في عام 1997 الذي أشار إلى أن من يطرحون مسألة الرق لا يبغون إلا تشويه صورة البلد، رابطاً الصلة بين هؤلاء ومجموعة كانت ضالعة في السابق في محاولة انقلاب.

5. On 7 and 8 November, I was received in Nouakchott by the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya, and met with the Prime Minister, Mohamed Lemine Ould Guig, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sheikh El-Avia Ould Mohamed Khouna.

For example, the body of Mohammad Abid Al-Taiee of Diyala who had been detained, was said to have been returned to his family in the first week of September 1994 bearing signs of severe torture.
