The Deputy Secretary-General opened the meeting, which was also addressed by the Chairman of the Committee on Information, the Director of the Bureau of Public Information of UNESCO and the Chairman of the World Press Freedom Committee.
وافتتح الجلسة نائب الأمين العام، وأدلى ببيانات أيضا رئيس لجنة الإعلام ومدير مكتب الإعلام باليونسكو ورئيس اللجنة العالمية لحرية الصحافة.

The UNESCO representative informed the Committee that the World Press Freedom Prize had been given by UNESCO to a jailed journalist and also referred to the imprisonment of a member of the jury for the Prize.
وأبلغ ممثل اليونسكو اللجنة بأن الجائزة العالمية لحرية الصحافة قد منحتها اليونسكو إلى صحفي سجين وأشار أيضا إلى إيداع عدد من حكام الجائزة في السجن.

It was also represented at numerous United Nations/UNESCO activities through its membership in the World Press Freedom Committee.

It welcomed the Department’s efforts to coordinate a number of events and programmes, such as World Press Freedom Day, organized by the Department in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) and the World Press Freedom Committee.

That seminar, which was entitled " The potential of the media: dialogue, mutual understanding and reconciliation " , also served as the venue for the award of the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize for 2009.
وحملت هذه الحلقة الدراسية عنوان " طاقات وسائط الإعلام الكامنة: الحوار والتفاهم والتوفيق " ومنحت في إطارها جائزة اليونسكو/غييرمو كانو العالمية لحرية الصحافة لعام 2009.

Organized by the World Press Freedom Committee, with the support of UNESCO and the Coordinating Committee of Press Freedom Organizations, which includes IPI, the conference examined how new media were expanding press freedom, and what repressive regimes were doing to restrict the free flow of information.

They appreciated the important commemoration of World Press Freedom Day on 4 May 1998, which had been organized by the Department of Public Information of the United Nations Secretariat, in cooperation with UNESCO, the United Nations Correspondents’ Association and the World Press Freedom Committee (WPFC).
وأعربوا عن تقديرهم للاحتفال الهام باليوم العالمي لحرية الصحافة في ٤ أيار/ مايو ٨٩٩١، والذي تولت تنظيمه إدارة شؤون اﻹعلام التابعة لﻷمانة العامة لﻷمم المتحدة، بالتعاون مع اليونسكو، ورابطة مراسلي اﻷمم المتحدة، واللجنة العالمية لحرية الصحافة.

An observance of World Press Freedom Day, organized by the Department in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Correspondents Association, and the World Press Freedom Committee, was held on 4 May 1998.

In May 2012, Tunisia hosted the award ceremony for the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, which was granted to Azerbaijani journalist Eynulla Fatullayev, and the UNESCO World Press Freedom Day conference, at which the Carthage Declaration, which provides recommendations for the protection and safety of journalists, was adopted.

Ahmad Zeidabadi, a prominent journalist and the Laureate of the 2011 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, is currently serving six years in prison.
