Acknowledging the vigorous process that has taken place to follow up this mandate during the five years that have passed since the World Food Summit, implying contributions by various United Nations human rights and development institutions and inter-agency arrangements, non-governmental organizations and civil society,

The World Food Summit in 1996 adopted as a target the reduction in the number of undernourished people to half the 1996 level by 2015.

We will strive, with others, to enhance food security in Africa and to see that commitments made at this month's World Food Summit are kept.

1. Appeals to the world’s leaders, through the Commission on Human Rights, when they assemble in Rome in November 2001 for the World Food Summit: five years later:
1- تناشد قادة العالم، من خلال لجنة حقوق الإنسان، أن يقوموا، عند اجتماعهم في روما في تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر 2001 بمناسبة " مؤتمر القمة العالمي للغذاء بعد مرور خمس سنوات " ، بما يلي:

(i) Urgent action must be taken to meet the commitments made in 1996 at the World Food Summit.
(ط) يجب أن يتخذ إجراء عاجل للوفاء بالالتزامات التي جرى التعهد بها في عام 1996 في مؤتمر القمة العالمي للغذاء.

During two meetings held in April and August 1997, representatives of the Office of High Commissioner and FAO, together with experts, discussed methods of implementing relevant recommendations adopted by the World Food Summit in Rome in 1996.
وناقش ممثلون عن المفوض السامي ومنظمة اﻷمم المتحدة لﻷغذية والزراعة، أثناء اجتماعين عقدا في نيسان/أبريل ١٩٩٧ وآب/أغسطس ١٩٩٧، طرائق تنفيذ التوصيات ذات الصلة التي اعتمدها مؤتمر القمة العالمي للغذاء في روما، في عام ١٩٩٦.

Along these lines, my delegation would like to take this opportunity to welcome the holding of the World Food Summit, which will take place from 13 to 17 November 1996 at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
وعلى نفس المنوال يود وفد بلدي أن ينتهز هذه الفرصة ليرحب بعقد مؤتمر القمة العالمي للغذاء في الفترة من ١٣ الى ١٧ تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر ١٩٩٦ بمقر منظمة اﻷمم المتحدة لﻷغذية والزراعة.

Not only was this Summit a landmark occasion in its own right, but it was also, appropriately, the first in a series of major United Nations summits and conferences that will end with the World Food Summit in Rome next month.

Recalling its resolution 1996/25 of 29 August 1996, in which it appealed to the world’s leaders who were to assemble in Rome for the World Food Summit in 1996 to reaffirm the fundamental right of every man, woman and child to be free from hunger, and to propose ways in which the right to food could be further clarified and implemented,
