ورغم أن الولاية الأصلية للجنة كانت تقييم مستويات التعرض للإشعاع المؤين وآثاره والإبلاغ عنها، جرى تعديل دور اللجنة بغية التصدي للتحديات الجديدة الناجمة عن التعرض للإشعاع، مثل الأمراض غير السرطانية والآثار التي تلحق بنظام التحصين وبالأحياء غير البشرية.
