In its resolution 51/202, the Assembly encouraged non-governmental organizations to participate in the work of the Commission for Social Development and in the implementation process related to the Summit to the maximum extent possible.

Since the Summit, the General Assembly has consistently reaffirmed the need for effective partnership and cooperation between Governments and the relevant actors of civil society, social partners, non-governmental organizations and the private sector, and has encouraged them to participate in the implementation process related to the Summit to the maximum extent possible.

29. Encourages non-governmental organizations to participate in the work of the Commission for Social Development, in accordance with Economic and Social Council resolution 1996/31 of 25 July 1996 and decisions 1996/315 of 14 November 1996 and 1997/298 of 23 July 1997, and in the implementation process related to the Summit to the maximum extent possible;

Additionally, the Summit secretariat is aware that a number of parallel activities and initiatives have been and are being undertaken by various Governments, non-governmental organizations, and agencies and programmes on issues related to the Summit, such as workshops and seminars on topics related to the Summit.

(b) Also decided that the Preparatory Committee will consider a report of the Secretary-General and reports on matters relating to the Summit submitted in accordance with resolution 47/92 by the organs, organizations and programmes of the United Nations system.
