The General Assembly had emphasized the need to ensure respect for the separate and distinct roles and functions of external and internal oversight mechanisms and had reaffirmed JIU as the only independent system-wide inspection, evaluation and investigation body.
٩ - واستأنف قائلا إن الجمعية العامة أكدت ضرورة ضمان احترام اﻷدوار والمهام المنفصلة والمتميزة التي تقوم بها آليات المراقبة الخارجية والداخلية وأكدت من جديد بأن وحدة التفتيش المشتركة هي الهيئة المستقلة الوحيدة في المنظومة بأسرها للتفتيش والتقييم والتحقيق.

89. Through its report on " Accountability and oversight in the United Nations Secretariat " (A/48/420, annex), JIU added its voice to the discussion which took place during the forty-eighth session of the General Assembly on the nature and specifics of external and internal oversight mechanisms.
٨٩ - ومن خلال تقرير وحدة التفتيش المشتركة عن " المساءلة والمراقبة في اﻷمانة العامة لﻷمم المتحدة " A/48/420)، المرفق(، أدلت الوحدة بدلوها في المناقشة التي جرت في الدورة الثامنة واﻷربعين للجمعية العامة بشأن طبيعة آليات المراقبة الخارجية والداخلية وخصائصها التفصيلية.

At this juncture, the Unit welcomes Assembly resolution 48/218, section II, paragraph 6, whereby a clear wish has been expressed by Member States to ensure respect for the separate and distinct roles and functions of external and internal oversight mechanisms.

The Unit also notes that the difference between the external and internal oversight functions and the need to ensure respect for their separate and distinct roles have been emphasized by Member States (see para. 6 of section II of General Assembly resolution 48/218 A; the sixth preambular paragraph of General Assembly resolution 48/218 B; and the second preambular paragraph of General Assembly resolution 50/233).
