17. Furthermore, the Centre has initiated preparations for a United Nations conference on Disarmament Issues, entitled " Arms control, disarmament and their future " , to be held in Osaka, Japan, from 19 to 22 August 2003.

2. Japan has been vigorously supporting the work at the United Nations since Prime Minister Murayama urged the United Nations to set up a panel to address the problems in June 1995 at the United Nations Conference on Disarmament Issues held at Nagasaki.

17. Furthermore, the Centre has initiated preparations for a United Nations Conference on Disarmament Issues, entitled " Mounting Challenges to Peace and Security and Disarmament Today " , to be held in Sapporo, Japan, from 26 to 29 July 2004.

With support from the Government of Japan and the host city Shinzuoka, the Office for Disarmament Affairs, through its Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific, organized the twenty-fourth United Nations Conference on Disarmament Issues in Shinzuoka, Japan, from 30 January to 1 February 2013.

30. With support from the Government of Japan, the Office for Disarmament Affairs, through its Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific, organized the twenty-second United Nations Conference on Disarmament Issues in Saitama, Japan, from 25 to 27 August 2010.

11. In cooperation with the Government of Japan and the city of Niigata, the Regional Centre organized the twenty-first United Nations Conference on Disarmament Issues in Niigata, Japan, from 26 to 28 August 2009 under the title " From Niigata to the world: renewed determination and action toward a nuclear weapon-free world " .
11 - ونظم المركز الإقليمي، بالتعاون مع حكومة اليابان ومدينة نييغاتا، مؤتمر الأمم المتحدة الحادي والعشرين المعني بقضايا نزع السلاح في نييغاتا، اليابان، في الفترة من 26 إلى 28 آب/أغسطس 2009 تحت عنوان " من نييغاتا إلى العالم: تجديد العزم والعمل نحو عالم خال من الأسلحة النووية " .

22. In addition, the Secretary-General wishes to express his appreciation to the Government of Japan, Kanazawa City and Ishikawa Prefecture for their financial support of the meeting of the United Nations Conference on Disarmament Issues in Ishikawa-Kanazawa, held in August 2001, as well as to Sapporo City and Hokkaido Prefecture for the technical and financial assistance extended to the Sapporo meeting on Mongolia's nuclear-weapon-free status.

16. Education for disarmament and non-proliferation. UNU-ISP and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan collaborated to promote the vital role of education in disarmament and non-proliferation, providing important inputs to the Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. UNU-ISP was also a key contributor at the twenty-second United Nations Conference on Disarmament Issues.

From 27 to 29 August 2007, the Centre organized, in Sapporo, Japan, in cooperation with the Government of Japan and the city of Sapporo and Hokkaido Prefecture, the nineteenth annual United Nations Conference on Disarmament Issues, on the theme " A new vision and required leadership towards a world free from nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction " .
