According to a report prepared by the United Nations Special Coordinator in the Occupied Territories, the Palestinian economy lost US$ 6 billion from 1992 to 1996, mostly owing to Israeli closures of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, which prevented Palestinian workers from reaching jobs in Israel.

In the course of the past year, the important work of establishing a United Nations coordination mechanism in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and of formulating an integrated United Nations approach to specific areas of assistance has been carried out by the office of the United Nations Special Coordinator in the Occupied Territories.

414. On 30 May, the United Nations Special Coordinator in the Occupied Territories, Mr. Terje Larsen, warned that if the social and economic experiment in Gaza failed, the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians would fail as well.
