Preparatory meetings were held in each of the five regional commissions, in response to General Assembly resolution 54/142 of 17 December 1999, which encouraged all regional commissions to carry out activities in support of the preparatory process in order to ensure a regional perspective on implementation and on further actions and initiatives.
