5. At its first substantive session, the Open-Ended Working Group on tracing held 19 plenary meetings, the first 5 of which were allocated to general debate, a meeting was devoted to a general exchange of views on the nature of the future international instrument on tracing and 2 meetings were allocated to presentations by international and regional organizations.

According to paragraph 5 of the International tracing Instrument, tracing is the systematic tracking of illicit small arms and light weapons found or seized on the territory of a State from the point of manufacture or the point of importation through the lines of supply to the point at which they became illicit.
