Four other decisions made at the fourth meeting of the Conference of Parties contain items of relevance to traditional forest-related knowledge, namely sharing of benefits, the ecosystem approach, the global taxonomy initiative and the review of article 27.3 (b) of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (this last issue is considered under section II below).

For the Convention and WTO to benefit from each other’s work, there should be scope for them to synchronize the review of article 27.3 (b) to take place in 1999, the full Agreement on Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights scheduled to take place in 2000, and the decisions and recommendations on this issue made at the fifth meeting of the Conference of Parties, in 2000.
