It also recognized that the Convention on Biological Diversity had a key role in supporting the work of the General Assembly with regard to those areas beyond national jurisdiction (see paras. 57-59), by focusing on provision of scientific and, as appropriate, technical information and advice.

19. To further scientific knowledge on areas beyond national jurisdiction, FAO, through one of its projects, is collaborating with other partners in the conduct of a pelagic survey on the seamounts in the Southwest Indian Ocean Ridge.

In accordance with article 5, parties are required to cooperate directly, or through competent international organizations, in respect of areas beyond national jurisdiction, for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity (see also A/59/62/Add.1, paras. 254-260).

With respect to the regulation of bottom fisheries in areas beyond national jurisdiction, paragraph 83 of resolution 61/105 called upon RFMOs with the competence to regulate bottom fisheries to adopt and implement measures, in accordance with the precautionary approach, ecosystem approaches and international law, to regulate bottom fishing activities beyond areas of national jurisdiction.

Further, it was noted that, even if the law of the sea were adopted as a model, problems had arisen in that area, particularly in relation to areas outside national jurisdiction where States Parties continue to have discussions and negotiations on the management of the shared resources of the oceans.
