The Summit had underscored the critical role of biodiversity in sustainable development, poverty reduction and cultural integrity and had called for a significant reduction, by 2010, in the loss of biodiversity, inviting countries that had not yet done so to ratify the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.
