The International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World, 2001-2010 was successful in bringing the concept of a " culture of peace " to all levels and segments of society and in stimulating concrete action, as demonstrated by the numerous activities that contributed to the implementation of the Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace over the course of the Decade.

Apart from the relatively low level of response by Member States about their action in pursuit of a culture of peace, one of the main challenges encountered was measuring the progress of the various stakeholders in implementing action in the eight areas outlined in the Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace over the course of the Decade.
