46.9 The main task of the programme is to assist Member States and the Commission on Sustainable Development and its inter-sessional subsidiary bodies in monitoring the progress achieved in the implementation of Agenda 21 and other outcomes of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, and in elaborating policy recommendations on sustainable development issues for the General Assembly, through the Economic and Social Council.

46.17 The subprogramme also seeks to broaden a dialogue on sustainable development issues between the organizations of the United Nations system and other international, regional and bilateral organizations, including those related to finance and trade, as well as non-governmental organizations and major groups, such as women, youth, indigenous people, local authorities, the scientific and business communities, and others.
