II. EXPENDITURES INCURRED FOR the United Nations LOGISTIC BASE AT BRINDISI
ثانيا - النفقات المتكبدة فيما يتعلق بقاعدة اﻷمم المتحدة للسوقيات في برينديزي

24. With regard to the United Nations Logistics Base at Brindisi, resources of $10.8 million had been provided for on an ad hoc basis for the current period from the various appropriations approved for different peacekeeping missions.
٢٤ - وفيما يتعلق بقاعدة اﻷمم المتحدة للسوقيات في برنديزى، قُدمت موارد قدرها ١٠,٨ مليون دولار على أساس مخصص للفترة الجارية من مختلف الاعتمادات المقررة لمختلف بعثات حفظ السلام.

163. As regards the United Nations Logistics Base at Brindisi, in some cases items transferred from peacekeeping missions for strategic stockpiling were either in poor condition or declared obsolete and were subsequently written off.

15. The expenditure of $2,585,000 represents the Mission’s prorated share of the cost of maintaining the United Nations Logistics Base at Brindisi for the reporting period, in accordance with General Assembly resolution 52/1 A of 15 October 1997.

The Committee notes that the savings realized during the reporting period are mostly attributable to the devaluation of local currency, reduced procurement of equipment and supplies owing to the availability of some of those items at the United Nations Logistics Base at Brindisi, Italy, and additional savings under transport operations.

This is because of a reduction in requirements under local staff salaries, resulting from the devaluation of the local currency, and under transport operations, as a result of the availability of replacement vehicles at the United Nations Logistics Base at Brindisi, partially offset by an increase in rations under military personnel costs.

20. With respect to the United Nations Logistics Base at Brindisi, the Advisory Committee was of the opinion that the Secretary-General’s report did not contain an adequate cost-benefit analysis, and reiterated its original request, as endorsed by the General Assembly, for such an analysis.

1. The budget for the maintenance of the United Nations Logistics Base for the period from 1 July 1996 to 30 June 1997 was set out in the report of the Secretary-General dated 1 April 1996 (A/50/907) and amounted to $7,875,000 gross ($7,375,200 net).

19. The cost of maintaining the United Nations Logistics Base for the six-month period from 1 January to 30 June 1996 is estimated at $4.1 million gross, as reflected in paragraph 6 of the report (A/50/907).

The Advisory Committee notes from annex I below that there is no difference in the original estimates for non-staff costs and the revised estimates, except in the case of the estimates for air operations, where a total decrease of $368,400 has been shown, offset by an increase of the same amount for the United Nations Logistics Base.

6. The cost of maintaining the United Nations Logistics Base for the six-month period from 1 January to 30 June 1996 is estimated at $4,078,500 gross ($3,828,600 net), as summarized in annex I. The expenditures incurred during this period will continue to be charged on an ad hoc basis from within the existing budgets of current peace-keeping operations and reflected in the performance reports of the missions to which they have been charged.
