The draft resolution entitled “Consolidation of peace through practical disarmament measures” was first introduced in last year's General Assembly, where it was adopted by consensus as resolution 51/45 N.

A joint resolution initiative by my country and others in the First Committee, focusing more generally on the need for practical disarmament measures to promote the consolidation of peace in areas that have suffered from conflict, is intended to be another step forward and to provide some new momentum for this Committee.

1. The members of the European Union have supported the consensus on General Assembly resolution 51/45 N entitled “Consolidation of peace through practical disarmament measures”.

General Assembly resolution 51/45N, entitled " Consolidation of peace through practical disarmament measures " focused attention on the fact that, in most conflict and post-conflict environments, questions of control of small arms and light weapons, demining, demobilization and reintegration of former combatants are increasingly crucial to effective conflict resolution and post-conflict rehabilitation.
