In endorsing the thrust of the proposals of the Secretary-General contained in resolution 63/261, the General Assembly stressed the importance of improving the capacity of the United Nations to prevent and resolve conflict, recognizing that effective action by the Department of Political Affairs and its partners would help to avert tragedies, and save lives, humanitarian and peacekeeping dollars, and precious development gains.
