For example, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment report recently suggested that 61 per cent of the world's total economic output of approximately $44 trillion comes from areas within 100 kilometres of the coastline.

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment has drawn attention to, among other matters, the ecosystem services delivered by wetlands that contribute to human well-being, which include fish and fibre, water supply, water purification, climate regulation, flood regulation, coastal protection, recreational opportunities and, increasingly, tourism.
