Mr. Tharoor's United Nations career began in 1978 on the staff of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva.

Shashi Tharoor is the father of twin sons, who are undergraduates at Yale University.

Mr. Tharoor is the award-winning author of nine books, as well as numerous articles and op-ed pieces in a wide range of publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the International Herald Tribune and Newsweek.

Born in London in 1956, Mr. Tharoor was educated in India and the United States, completing a Ph.D. in 1978 at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, where he received the Robert B. Stewart Prize for Best Student.
ولد السيد ثارور في لندن عام 1956 وتلقى تعليمه في الهند والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، ونال شهادة الدكتوراه في عام 1978 من كلية فليتشر للقانون والدبلوماسية بجامعة تافتس التي حصل فيها على جائزة روبيرت ب. ستيوارت كأفضل طالب.

In view of this, and to help generate a consensus on the selection of an Asian as Secretary-General, I now have the honour to inform you that the Government of India has decided to withdraw the candidature of Mr. Tharoor.
لذلك، ولكي تساعد في التوصل إلى توافق في الآراء حول اختيار شخص من آسيا أمينا عاما، أتشرف الآن بأن أبلغكم بأن حكومة الهند قررت سحب ترشيح السيد ثارور.

I wish to extend my thanks to the Secretary-General for his ongoing support and to Under-Secretary-General Shashi Tharoor for his interest and involvement in the matter.

The Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, Mr. Shashi Tharoor, delivered a comprehensive introductory statement and responded to questions raised by delegations during the general debate on the ongoing and fundamental reorientation of the focus and structure of the Department of Public Information at Headquarters and in the field.
وأدلى وكيل الأمين العام للاتصالات والإعلام السيد شاشي ثارور ببيان استهلالي شامل ورد على الأسئلة التي طرحتها الوفود خلال المناقشة العامة بشأن العملية الأساسية المتواصلة التي تجريها إدارة شؤون الإعلام لإعادة توجيه تركيز وهيكل الإدارة في المقر وفي الميدان.

Shashi Tharoor is currently United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information and has led the Department of Public Information since January 2001.
يشغل شاشي ثارور حاليا منصب وكيل الأمين العام للاتصالات وشؤون الإعلام وهو يرأس إدارة شؤون الإعلام منذ كانون الثاني/يناير 2001.

At the Secretary-General's request, in January 2001 Mr. Tharoor accepted what was initially intended as a temporary assignment as interim Head of the widely criticized Department of Public Information.

These problems were solved without publicity and without creating international embarrassment -- notably the case of a Polish seaman who jumped ship and took refuge on board a United States destroyer, nearly sparking off a diplomatic crisis between Singapore and the United States of America which Mr. Tharoor defused.
وجرت تسوية هذه المشاكل بدون ضجة إعلامية وبدون التسبب في حرج دولي، ولا سيما فيما يتعلق بقضية البحار البولندي الذي فر وطلب اللجوء على متن مدمرة أمريكية، الأمر الذي كان على وشك التسبب في أزمة دبلوماسية بين سنغافورة والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية فتدخل السيد ثارور لنزع فتيلها.

In January 1998, Mr. Tharoor was named by the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, as a " Global Leader of Tomorrow " .
وفي كانون الثاني/يناير 1998، اختير السيد ثارور من المحفل الاقتصادي العالمي بدافوس، بسويسرا، كأحد ' ' رواد المستقبل على الصعيد العالمي``.
