Cançado Trindade (Brazil) (163 votes), Mr. Christopher Greenwood (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) (157 votes), Mr. Rony Abraham (France) (152 votes), Mr. Awn Shawkat Al-Khasawneh (Jordan) (151 votes) and Ms. Miriam Defensor-Santiago (Philippines) (106 votes) obtained an absolute majority of votes.

At its resumed fifty-ninth session, in February 2005, the General Assembly, together with the Security Council, elected Mr. Ronny Abraham (France) a member of the Court for a term of office expiring on 5 February 2009 to fill a vacancy resulting from the resignation of Mr. Gilbert Guillaume (France) (decision 59/415).

Having obtained the required absolute majority of votes in both the General Assembly and the Security Council, Mr. Rony Abraham (France), Mr. Awn Shawkat Al-Khasawneh (Jordan), Mr. Antonio A. Cançado Trindade (Brazil) and Mr. Christopher Greenwood (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) were elected members of the International Court of Justice for a term of office of nine years beginning on 6 February 2009.
