194. The Committee emphasizes that article 5 of the Convention stipulates that all appropriate measures to modify the social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women be taken, with a view to the elimination of prejudices and customary and all other practices that are based on stereotyped roles for men and women.

However, Articles 2(f) and 5(a) of CEDAW call for abolishing and modifying such patterns and eliminating all practices based on stereotyped roles for men and women.

85. Turkmenistan is taking all appropriate measures to modify the social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women, with a view to achieving the elimination of prejudices and customary and all other practices which are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women.

One example of such an interpretation can be found in the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, which speaks of the need for a change in the traditional roles of both men and women in society and in the family, these being based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women (preamble and art. 5).

Under article 5 of Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, States parties are to take all appropriate measures to modify the social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women, with a view to achieving the elimination of prejudices and customary and all other practices which are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women.

Article 5(b) reinforces this obligation by providing that States must take " all appropriate measures to modify the social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women, with a view to achieving the elimination of prejudices and customary and all other practices which are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women " .

In addition, article 5 of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women urges State parties to take measures to eliminate " prejudices and customary and all other practices which are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women " , acknowledging the role of customs and traditions in perpetuating violence against girls.

43. The issue of gender with respect to certain social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women, with a view to achieving the elimination of prejudices, customary and all other practices, which are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes, or on stereotyped roles for men and women are being discussed more openly over the airwaves in the Bahamas.

It explicitly affirms reproductive choice and health as a human rights issue and also establishes the obligation of States parties " to modify the social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women, with a view to achieving the elimination of prejudices and customary and all other practices which are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women " (art. 5 (a)).
