At its sixty-third session, the General Assembly discussed the issue of smoke-free United Nations premises pursuant to Economic and Social Council resolution 2006/42 and Council decision 2008/231.

4. The Secretary-General is fully committed to implementing the resolution on smoke-free United Nations premises.

Regrettably, in the past, compliance with the smoking ban at United Nations premises has been uneven among duty stations and was found particularly wanting at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

44. On 3 November 2008, the General Assembly, at its sixty-third session, unanimously adopted its resolution 63/8, on smoke-free United Nations premises.

Pursuant to resolution 63/8, the Secretary-General has put in place a comprehensive strategy for smoke-free United Nations premises that informs staff, delegations and visitors to United Nations offices of the implementation of a complete smoking ban.
