In Africa, the urgent reproductive health needs of women in refugee and emergency situations were the focus of joint activities of UNFPA, UNICEF and UNHCR to provide emergency reproductive health care to displaced persons and refugees in Burundi, Rwanda and Zaire, undertaken in collaboration with other relief agencies.

OHCHR has engaged with the Sub-regional Centre for Human Rights and Democracy for Central Africa (Yaoundé, Cameroon) and with the United Nations Operation in Burundi (BINUB) with a view to providing legal and policy advice to the Government of Burundi for the establishment of an independent NHRI.
