In August 1995, the Tropical Agricultural Research and Training Centre (CATIE) based in Costa Rica, the Rosenthial School of Marine and Atmospheric Conservation of the University of Miami, Florida, United States and the Mesoamerican Program of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources-World Conservation Union (IUCN) jointly organized a Workshop on Productive Management of mangroves in Leon, Nicaragua.

Such a density of juvenile fish in mangrove waters has been attributed mainly to three underlying causes: (a) an abundance of appropriate food for juvenile fish in mangrove estuaries; (b) minimal risk of predation by large fish due to the reduced visibility in turbid mangrove waters; and (c) structural complexity of mangroves, which affords excellent shelter and protection for juveniles.100

ITTO is promoting the expanded collection and dissemination of data on mangrove ecosystems in the tropics through the global mangrove information system developed in collaboration with the International Society for mangrove Ecosystems (ISME).
