12. The Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women invited the Executive Board to work with the Office of the Special Adviser to secure funds for INSTRAW.

At the same meeting, in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations, the Council decided to extend invitations, under rule 39 of its provisional rules of procedure, to Ms. Margot Wallström, Special Representative of the SecretaryGeneral on Sexual Violence in Conflict, and Ms. Rachel Mayanja, Special Adviser to the SecretaryGeneral on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women.

His delegation welcomed the continued efforts of the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women in promoting gender mainstreaming, and applauded the adoption by the Economic and Social Council of a regular sub-item on mainstreaming a gender perspective into all policies and programmes in the United Nations system.

I. Inter-agency support for gender mainstreaming 6. The Inter-Agency Network on Women and Gender Equality (IANWGE), chaired by the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, plays a critical role in the promotion, support and monitoring of gender mainstreaming throughout the United Nations system.

On 27 April 2010, the Council held a public meeting during which it was briefed by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Margot Wallström, and the Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, Rachel Mayanja.

INSTRAW stated that at the time of the resumed first session of its Executive Board (October 2004), when the Institute's current programme of work was presented and approved, the new incumbent for the post of Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women had not yet taken office.
12 - وذكر المعهد أنـه لـدى استئناف الدورة الأولى لمجلسـه التنفيذي (تشرين الأول/أكتوبر 2004)، عندما جرى عـرض برنامج عمل المعهد الجاري واعتماده، لم تكن الشاغلة الجديدة لمنصب المستشارة الخاصة للأمين العام المعنية بالقضايا الجنسانية والنهوض بالمـرأة قد تولت منصبها بعد.

7. Also at the 13th meeting, the Assistant Secretary-General and Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, the Director of INSTRAW and the Deputy Director of UNIFEM responded to questions raised by the representative of Cuba (see A/C.3/55/SR.13).

The Inter-Agency Network on Women and Gender Equality, chaired by the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, and its task forces, as well as regional networks coordinated by the regional commissions, and United Nations inter-agency thematic groups at the country level, remain key conduits for increased coordination and collaborative efforts.

At its 18th meeting, on 18 October, the Committee heard introductory statements by the Assistant Secretary-General and Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women and the representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (see A/C.3/65/SR.18).
