6. Compared to the biennium 2002-2003, the total number of consultants and individual contractors hired in 2004-2005 decreased by 2,852 (35 per cent); there were 1,912 fewer consultants (32.4 per cent) and 940 fewer individual contractors (41.7 per cent).

Under the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants or Individual Contractors (see ST/AI/1999/7/Amend.1, annex), disputes arising out of the contractual terms of consultants and individual contractors should first be addressed through amicable settlement efforts, including conciliation under the Conciliation Rules of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).

In terms of the educational level of consultants and individual contractors, the 2001 data show that over a third (35.3 per cent) of the persons held a second university degree and over a quarter (20.1 per cent) held a first university degree. More than 29.4 per cent of the persons held an advanced university degree and 6.3 per cent had no university degree.
