III. HUMANITARIAN SITUATION OF THE REMAINING Serb population

58. The humanitarian situation of the Serb population who have remained in the former Sectors is particularly disturbing.
٥٨ - وتثير الحالة اﻹنسانية للسكان الصرب الباقين في القطاعين السابقين الجزع بشكل خاص.

Although the Government of Croatia declared its intention to respect fully the human rights of the remaining Serb population, it was not able to create confidence among the Serbs that it was in their interests to remain in Croatia.
ورغم أن حكومة كرواتيا أعلنت اعتزامها أن تحترم حقوق الانسان للسكان الصرب المتبقين احتراما تاما، فإنه لم يكن بمقدورها أن تولد لدى الصرب ثقة في أن من مصلحتهم أن يبقوا في كرواتيا.

The object of the announced population census to be conducted in the near future is but to legitimize the newly created situation following the forcible expulsion of the Serb population.

VI. LEGAL AND OTHER PROTECTIONS FOR THE CROATIAN Serb population

66. The human rights situation of the Serb population, particularly those living in the former sectors, remains a serious cause for concern.
٦٦- لا تزال حالة حقوق اﻹنسان للسكان الصرب وخاصة الذين يعيشون في القطاعين السابقين سببا خطيرا للقلق.

The latest aggression of Croatia on a part of the Republic of Serbian Krajina has caused the exodus of the entire Serbian population of this area, which is the result of a policy of systematic ethnic cleansing of the Serbian population continuously pursued by the Croatian authorities.
وقد أدى اعتداء كرواتيا اﻷخير على جزء من جمهورية كرايينا الصربية الى هجرة جميع السكان الصربيين من هذه المنطقة، وذلك نتيجة لسياسة تطهير عرقي منتظم للسكان الصرب تنتهجها السلطات الكرواتية بشكل مستمر.

In view of all above facts, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia expects the Security Council to make a decision on the extension of the mandate of UNTAES, in an unchanged form, until the expiration of the transitional period as a logical step, which would be the best guarantee for the preservation of peace and security as well as full protection of the local Serbian population.
وبالنظر الى جميع الحقائق المذكورة أعلاه، تتوقع جمهورية يوغوسلافيا الاتحادية أن يتخذ مجلس اﻷمن قرارا بشأن تمديد ولاية اﻹدارة الانتقالية دونما تغيير في شكلها، حتى انتهاء الفترة الانتقالية وذلك كخطوة منطقية ستكون أفضل ضمان للمحافظة على السلام واﻷمن وكذلك للحماية التامة للسكان الصرب المحليين.

In addition, the takeover will have serious reverberations for the ethnic cleansing of Serbs from Kosovska Mitrovica, the only major town in Kosovo and Metohija from which they have not been completely cleansed, all the more so as the Section is the key source of income for the Serbian population of the town.
