In 2008, the Commission had decided that it was necessary, in light of scientific progress, to review the Recommendations for the guidance of contractors for the assessment of the possible environmental impacts arising from exploration for polymetallic nodules in the Area issued in 2001 (ISBA/7/LTC/Rev.1**).

After a detailed discussion, including revision of the text prepared by the secretariat, the Commission adopted, on 22 May 2009, recommendations for the guidance of contractors for the reporting of actual and direct exploration expenditures as required by annex 4, section 10, of the Regulations on Prospecting and Exploration for Polymetallic Nodules in the Area (ISBA/15/LTC/7).

7. Review of the recommendations for the guidance of contractors on the reporting of actual and direct exploration expenditures.
٧ - استعراض التوصيات المتعلقة بالإرشادات المقدّمة للمتعاقدين بشأن الإبلاغ عن نفقات الاستكشاف الفعلية والمباشرة.

As a result, the Commission issued as an interim document a revised set of recommendations for the guidance of contractors and sponsoring States in relation to training programmes under plans of work for exploration (ISBA/19/LTC/14) with the aim of providing advice to contractors on the implementation of training obligations and assisting the Secretary-General in negotiations with contractors on the development of training programmes.

As agreed at the eighteenth session, the Commission resumed consideration at its February meeting of the draft recommendations for the guidance of contractors in the assessment of possible environmental impacts arising from exploration for marine minerals in the Area, including polymetallic sulphides.
