We therefore call for an early conclusion of the Uruguay Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). We also call again on the developed countries to achieve without further delay the target of 0.7 per cent of their gross national product for official development assistance that was set over 24 years ago by this very Assembly.

The President of the World Bank, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, the Officer-in-charge of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the Deputy Director-General of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and the Under-Secretary-General for Policy Coordination and Sustainable Development responded to questions raised during the exchange of views.

40. In the light of the anticipated negative impact by some countries of the new multilateral trade regime arising out of the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations, it was essential to establish a unit for the least developed countries within the Secretariat of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT)/World Trade Organization to routinely monitor any adverse effects and recommend appropriate remedial measures.
