It should also be borne in mind that the principles of equal rights of men and women and of non-discrimination on the basis of sex are set forth in the Charter of the United Nations as one of its purposes, in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948 and in various multilateral instruments, to which Thailand, Tunisia and Bangladesh are parties.

Discrimination against women does not serve the interests of the individual, the society or the State, because it violates the principles of equal rights and respect for human dignity that are called for in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, whose sixtieth anniversary is being celebrated in 2008 by all of progressive mankind.
