The follow-up to the 2002 International Conference on Financing for Development identified a specific role for the Council's annual spring special high-level meeting with the Bretton Woods institutions in the follow-up to the Conference.

The Conference further recommended that the task to ensure effective monitoring, coordination and supervision of the involvement of the United Nations system in the follow-up to the Conference be given to the Administrative Committee on Coordination (ACC), under the direct leadership of the Secretary-General.

The Vienna Declaration had called for an annual United Nations coordination meeting at a high level and, pursuant to that request, the Secretary-General had placed on the agenda of the Administrative Committee for its first session of 1994 an item on follow-up to the Conference.
