Cooperation with organizations outside the United Nations system is a feature of some projects as well, such as that of the world energy assessment undertaken by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, together with the World Energy Council.

For example, a study by the World Energy Council and the International Institute for Applied Systems Research (IIASA) points out that in the absence of sulphur-abatement measures, acid depositions in parts of China and South Asia could eventually exceed the critical load for major agricultural crops by a factor of 10.
