48. His delegation was in favour of expanding the role of the depositary in the case of manifestly impermissible reservations, as envisaged in draft guideline 2.1.8, on the understanding that it was directed primarily at reservations that were potentially incompatible with the object and purpose of the Treaty.
48 - وأعرب كذلك عن تأييد وفده توسيع دور الوديع في حالة التحفظات غير المسموح بها بوضوح على النحو المتوخى في مشروع المبدأ التوجيهي 2-1-8 من منطلق أنه موجَّه أساساً إلى التحفظات التي يمكن أن لا تتواءم مع هدف المعاهدة ومقصدها.

(6) A contrario, it goes without saying that when the content of a specified reservation is indeed indicated in the reservations clause itself, a reservation consistent with that provision is not subject to the test of compatibility with the object and purpose of the Treaty.

Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States of America reacted to an interpretative declaration by Yugoslavia concerning the 1971 Seabed Treaty by considering it first as an actual interpretative declaration (which they rejected) and then as a reservation (which they considered to be late and inconsistent with the object and purpose of the Treaty).

Some delegations maintained that a simple objection to a reservation incompatible with the object and purpose of the Treaty could result only in the application of the whole treaty without taking account of the reservation, which amounts to what has been called the " super-maximum " effect of the objection.
