Chapter 18, Protection of the Quality and Supply of Freshwater Resources: Application of Integrated Approaches to the Development, Management and Use of Water Resources (1992) of the Agenda 21 suggests that all States could implement " Mandatory environmental impact assessment of all major water resource development projects potentially impairing water quality and aquatic ecosystems. "
وقد جاء في الفصل الثامن عشر المعنون " حماية نوعية وإمدادات موارد المياه العذبة: تطبيق نُهج متكاملة على تنمية وإدارة واستخدام الموارد المائية " (1992) ضمن جدول أعمال القرن الحادي والعشرين أنه يمكن لجميع الدول أن تُنفّذ عمليات تقييم إلزامي للأثر البيئي المترتب على جميع المشاريع الرئيسية لتنمية الموارد المائية التي يُحتمل أن تُضر بنوعية المياه والنظم الإيكولوجية المائية " .
