Assessing the costs and benefits of adaptation options forms an important part of adaptation planning, allowing decision makers to make informed decisions when choosing options.

Before elaborating on efforts undertaken to assess costs and benefits of adaptation options at different levels and sectors (in chapter II C below), this document will consider the methods used in the section below.

Whereas earlier assessments of the costs and benefits of adaptation options focused on the global level, there are a growing number of studies, particularly in developing countries, undertaken at the national, subnational and sectoral level.

In view of the information in this document and the conclusions of the technical paper, it is clear that knowledge on the costs and benefits of adaptation options is still evolving and that a number of issues for further consideration need to be investigated.
55- نظراً إلى المعلومات الواردة في هذه الوثيقة واستنتاجات الورقة التقنية، فإن من الواضح أن المعارف المتعلقة بتكاليف ومنافع خيارات التكيف ما زالت في مرحلة التطور وأن هناك حاجة إلى دراسة عدد من المواضيع التي يجب مواصلة النظر فيها.

The Parties are also invited to undertake impact, vulnerability and adaptation assessments, including assessments of financial needs as well as economic, social and environmental costs and benefits of adaptation options (para. 4 (b)).

In terms of sectoral coverage, the EU reported that the costs and benefits of adaptation options are better understood in some sectors (agriculture, water resources management and coastal zone management) than in others.
31- من ناحية التغطية القطاعية، أبلغ الاتحاد الأوروبي أن تكاليف ومنافع خيارات التكيف تُفهم فهماً أفضل في بعض القطاعات (الزراعة وإدارة الموارد المائية وإدارة المناطق الساحلية) منه في أخرى.

A number of gaps and needs remain, concerning not only a need for more assessments of the costs and benefits of adaptation options but also methodological gaps and needs encountered by adaptation researchers and planners when undertaking such assessments.
49- ما زال هناك عدد من الثغرات والاحتياجات، ليس فيما يتعلق بالحاجة إلى مزيد من التقييمات لتكاليف ومنافع خيارات التكيف فحسب، إذ يوجد أيضاً ثغرات وللاحتياجات منهجية يصادفها الباحثون والمخططون في مجال التكيف عند إجراء هذه التقييمات.

With regard to the need to increase the number of assessments and share the knowledge that is acquired, the EU white paper on adapting to climate change outlines efforts under way to improve the dissemination of knowledge on methods and approaches to establish the costs and benefits of adaptation options.

At the same session, the SBSTA requested the secretariat to prepare before SBSTA 31 a technical paper reviewing the existing literature on the potential costs and benefits of adaptation options and to organize, under the guidance of the Chair of the SBSTA and before SBSTA 32, a technical workshop on costs and benefits of adaptation options.
