In these cases, the Ombud has pointed out that the CEDAW Convention imposes an obligation on States Parties to take all appropriate measures to modify the social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women, with a view to achieving the elimination of prejudices concerning the sexes which are based on stereotyped roles for men and women.

Article 5 requests States Parties to take all appropriate measures to modify the social and cultural patterns of men and women, with a view to achieving the elimination of prejudices and practices based on discrimination against either of the sexes. It also requests States Parties to ensure that family education includes a proper understanding of maternity as a social function.
تطالب المادة الخامسة الدول الأطراف باتخاذ جميع التدابير المناسبة لتغيير الأنماط الاجتماعية والثقافية لسلوك الرجل والمرأة بهدف تحقيق القضاء على التمييز والممارسات القائمة على الاعتقاد بتميز أحد الجنسين على الآخر مع تضمين التربية العائلية فهما سليما للأمومة بوصفها وظيفة اجتماعية.

Article 5 of the Convention calls on States parties to take all appropriate measures to modify the patterns of conduct of men and women " with a view to achieving the elimination of prejudices and customary and all other practices that are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women " .
وتدعو الاتفاقية في مادتها 5 الدول الأطراف إلى أن تعتمد جميع التدابير المناسبة لتعديل أنماط سلوك الرجال والنساء، ' ' بهدف تحقيق القضاء على التحيزات والعادات العرفية وكل الممارسات الأخرى القائمة على الاعتقاد بكون أي من الجنسين أدنى أو أعلى من الآخر، أو على أدوار نمطية للرجل والمرأة``.

However, she expressed concern at the apparent persistence of traditional roles and stereotypes and, in that connection, drew attention to article 5 of the Convention, which required States parties to take all appropriate measures to modify the social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women, with a view to achieving the elimination of prejudices.
