As part of the international campaign to eliminate violence against women that was launched by the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, on 25 February 2008, Al-Hakim Foundation has undertaken numerous activities with a view to increasing public awareness of and intolerance for this phenomenon.

Representatives of Al-Hakim Foundation regularly attended the meetings of the Human Rights Council and its universal periodic review, Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Commission for Social Development, Commission on the Status of Women and Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

In 2007, Al-Hakim Foundation organized and participated in a two-day conference entitled " Iraq for all Iraqis " at the United Nations.

Ever since 25 December 2008, when the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, launched an international campaign to combat violence against women, the Al-Hakim Foundation has undertaken numerous actions aimed at heightening popular awareness in an effort to counter that phenomenon in Iraq.

Since its establishment in 2003, the Al-Hakim Foundation has implemented numerous anti-poverty programmes as well as programmes aimed at helping marginalized social groups, such as the " orphan sponsorship " programme, which has brought benefits to some 100,000 orphans from poor families.

236. The Al-Hakim Foundation urged Djibouti to reform effectively the judiciary, which was reportedly under the influence of the executive, with courts failing to respect fair trial standards, particularly in political cases not tried in public.

386. The Al-Hakim Foundation appreciated the efforts made by the Government in the area of human rights and the support provided to the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission and other institutions, such as the commissions to combat corruption, reform civil administration and eliminate discrimination against women.
386- وأعربت مؤسسة الحكيم عن تقديرها لجهود الحكومة في مجال حقوق الإنسان، وللدعم المقدم منها إلى لجنة حقوق الإنسان الأفغانية المستقلة ومؤسسات أخرى، مثل اللجان المعنية بمكافحة الفساد، ولجهودها في إصلاح الإدارة المدنية، والقضاء على التمييز ضد المرأة.

560. The Al-Hakim Foundation noted Yemen's commitment to universal periodic review recommendations despite the difficulties and obstacles encountered by the country, in particular the ongoing military operations in the north, which had led many inhabitants to leave their homes.
560- وأشارت مؤسسة الحكيم إلى التزام اليمن بالتوصيات المقدمة في إطار الاستعراض الدوري الشامل على الرغم من الصعوبات والعقبات التي يواجهها البلد، ولا سيما العمليات العسكرية المستمرة في شماله وما أدّت إليه من رحيل كثير من السكان عن ديارهم.

Nevertheless, we will maintain our very real efforts to empower women through Iraqi civil society organizations, of which Al-Hakim Foundation is one of the most prominent. The Foundation consistently aims to increase the visibility of women in all State sectors and encourage them to make an active contribution to the political process; it works with women in order to preserve the successes that have been achieved in the new Iraq.
