First of all, on the Biological Weapon Convention, I would like thank Ambassador Khan for the very extensive and comprehensive explanation he gave.

بيد أن الإنجازات في مجال التكنولوجيا الحيوية وعلوم الحياة فضلا عن توافرها على نطاق واسع، كما قال الأمين العام كوفي عنان، الذي اقتبس منه السفير خان في عرضه، تصاحبها زيادة في خطر أن تستفيد الجهات التي تعمل على نشر هذه الأسلحة، سواء كانت دولا أم كيانات من غير الدول، من الثغرات الكامنة في الاتفاقية.

We all know that the instruments are not as sophisticated as the ones foreseen by the Chemical Weapons Convention, and we indeed appreciate the kind of resuscitation of this Convention which has taken place in past years and to hear Ambassador Khan say that the Biological Weapons Convention is now in good shape.

Ambassador Khan of course referred to the decision back on 20 August 1998 appointing Ambassador Moher as Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee for the current session, in the context of starting negotiations on the FMCT.
