5. The Charter of the United Nations declares one of the Purposes of the Organization to be " promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion " .

2. Consistent with the provisions of Article 1 of the Charter of the United Nations, United Nations activities in the field of human rights have, for almost 50 years, been devoted to promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion.
٢ - وتمشيا مع أحكام المادة ١ من الميثاق كرست أنشطة اﻷمم المتحدة في ميدان حقوق اﻹنسان لمدة ٥٠ عاما تقريبا، لتعزيز وتشجيع احترام حقوق اﻹنسان والحريات اﻷساسية للناس جميعا دون تمييز بسبب العرق أو الجنس أو اللغة أو الدين.

It is one of the purposes of the United Nations, in virtue of the Charter, " to achieve international cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion " (Art. 1, para. 3).

By incorporating in the Charter that one of the purposes of the United Nations is " to achieve international cooperation ... in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion " , States Members of the United Nations engaged themselves to ensure, in cooperation with the international Organization, universal and effective respect for human rights.

This is an opportune occasion to refer to the purposes and principles of the United Nations, as expressed in the Charter, especially the purpose of achieving “international co-operation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion”.
