2. By the same resolution, the General Assembly established the Intergovernmental Group to Monitor the Supply and Shipping of Oil and Petroleum Products to South Africa and requested it to report on this subject to its following session.

The States members of the Caribbean Community take this opportunity to pay a tribute to the Intergovernmental Group to Monitor the Supply and Shipping of Oil and Petroleum Products to South Africa, as well as to the relevant non-governmental organizations in this field, whose work in support of the international oil boycott was indispensable.

Last week, the General Assembly had the opportunity to be formally informed by you, Mr. President, that the Transitional Executive Council in South Africa had become operational and that consequently the embargo related to the supply of petroleum and Petroleum Products to South Africa and investment in the petroleum industry had been lifted.

In addition, the Centre serviced the Advisory Committee of the United Nations Educational and Training Programme for Southern Africa, the Commission against Apartheid in Sports, the Committee of Trustees of the United Nations Trust Fund for South Africa and the Intergovernmental Group to Monitor the Supply and Shipping of Oil and Petroleum Products to South Africa.

In paragraph 2 the General Assembly would further decide that all provisions adopted by the General Assembly related to the imposition of an embargo on the supply of petroleum and Petroleum Products to South Africa, and on investment in the petroleum industry there, should cease to have effect as of the date on which the Transitional Executive Council becomes operational.
