23. On 31 August 2012, the Committee sent a letter to the Government of India expressing its concern that the Jawara people in the Andaman Islands had allegedly become the subject of " human safaris " for tourists who drive through the Jawara Reserve on the Andaman Truck Road.

It stretches 2,500 kilometers from the northernmost point to the southernmost point, and has a width of 1,250 kilometers from East to West, with a 1,840 kilometers long coastline in the East (the Gulf of Thailand) and 856 kilometers long coastline in the West (the Indian Ocean/Andaman Sea).

Guides illustrating linkages between indigenous cultural practices and the fostering of sustainable biodiversity use within Andaman Sea Islands (India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand) were also developed in both English and Thai.

This is not a call for unrestrained migration. But it is important that we accept the fact that efforts to block migration are bound to fail, with disastrous consequences for human lives – whether they are lost on sinking boats in the Mediterranean and the Andaman Sea or threatened by xenophobic violence in South Africa, India, or elsewhere.
