I was born in Biba, in Beni Suef Governorate, Egypt. I obtained a B.Sc. degree in agricultural science from the University of Cairo in 1979. I subsequently spent seven years in prison in connection with the case of the organization known as Al-Jihad, which was accused of the assassination of former President Anwar Sadat. After that, I stayed for one year in Egypt and then travelled abroad.
