Implement a number of measures within a framework of effective partnerships between the public and private sectors and civil society to improve urban planning, upgrade the provision of services and enhance the sustainability of Arab cities by improving the living conditions of the poor in urban areas; and develop urban programmes and bold local initiatives to address multisectoral obstacles limiting the functionality of Arab cities;

From 1 to 3 November 2010, the Department of Environment, Housing and Sustainable Development of the League of Arab States hosted an expert group meeting for a report on the state of Arab cities in Cairo, in partnership with the UN-Habitat Kuwait office for Arab cities, the Arab Towns Organization, the Arab Urban Development Institute and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia.
