At the UNESCO Fifth International Conference on Adult Education held at Hamburg in July 1997, IFUW was represented by an expert in education.

The Tribunal, at its first session, held at Hamburg from 1 to 31 October 1996, considered, inter alia, the report of the fifth Meeting of States Parties and took note of the decisions taken by it.

While the members of the Tribunal are expected to begin their organizational work on 1 October, the inauguration of the Tribunal and the swearing-in of the members is scheduled for a ceremony to be held on 18 October at Hamburg.

The Working Group was reminded that the text of paragraph 1 had been corrected through the deletion of the phrase " or, alternatively, to the United Nations Convention on the Carriage of Goods by Sea concluded at Hamburg on 31 March 1978, " (see A/CN.9/WG.III/WP.81/Corr.1, para. 3).

" (b) It will, for a period of time not exceeding ten years after entry into force of this Convention, substitute the amounts of limitation of liability set out in article 61, paragraph 1, by the amounts set out in article 6, paragraph 1 (a) of the United Nations Convention on Carriage of Goods by Sea, concluded at Hamburg on 31 March 1978.

In the region of Latin America and the Caribbean, a regional preparatory conference was held at Brasilia from 22 to 24 January 1997 to discuss UNESCO's Fifth International Conference on Adult Education (CONITTEA V), held at Hamburg, Germany, from 14 to 18 July, where the issue of women's empowerment through education was strongly supported.
