رغبة في تهيئة دواعي الاستقرار والرفاهية الضروريين لقيام علاقات سليمة ودية بين الأمم مؤسسة على احترام المبدأ الذي يقضي بالتسوية في الحقوق بين الشعوب وبأن يكون لكل منها تقرير مصيرها، تعمل الأمم المتحدة على:

Aware that the development of friendly relations among nations, based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, is among the purposes and principles of the United Nations, as defined in its Charter,
إذ تدرك أن إنماء العلاقات الودية بين اﻷمم، على أساس احترام مبدأ المساواة في الحقوق وتقرير الشعوب لمصيرها، هو من مقاصد اﻷمم المتحدة ومبادئها، كما هي محددة في ميثاقها،

The Organization has always committed itself to actions to maintain international peace and security. It has been able to foster friendly relations between nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights of peoples and their right to self-determination.
لقد ظلت المنظمة ملتزمة دائما بالعمل على المحافظة على السلم واﻷمن الدوليين، وتمكنت من تعزيز العلاقات الودية بين الدول على أساس احترام مبدأ مساواة الشعوب في الحقوق، وحقها في تقرير المصير.

إدراكا منها بأن تنمية العلاقات الودية بين الدول، على أساس الاحترام لمبدأ المساواة في الحقوق وتقرير المصير للشعوب، واردة ضمن مقاصد الأمم المتحدة ومبادئها، على النحو المحددة في الميثاق،
