Whereas, according to the law in force in most countries, prosecutions and the imposition of penalties become extinguished by the expiry of a period of time fixed by the law, crimes under international law are considered to be imprescriptible, i.e. however much time has elapsed since their commission, it will always be possible to prosecute and punish their perpetrators and to repair the damage caused.
وبينما تقضي القوانين المعمول بها في أغلبية البلدان بإبطال الملاحقات ووقف العقوبات بنفاد الفترة الزمنية المحددة لها في القانون، تعتبر الجرائم الواقعة في إطار القانون الدولي غير خاضعة للتقادم، أي أنه يجوز، مهما مرّ الزمن عليها، ملاحقة مرتكبيها ومعاقبتهم وتقديم التعويض عن الضرر الملحق.
