III. Cooperation between ECCAS and the United Nations
ثالثا - التعاون بين الجماعة الاقتصادية لدول وسط أفريقيا والأمم المتحدة

2. Cooperation between ECCAS and ECA gained momentum in 1998 following the adoption by the heads of State and Government of ECCAS of the Community Relaunching Plan established by the Commission.

15. Although a strong collaboration has been established between ECCAS and the African Union on the Central African Republic dossier, there remain some differences in their handling of the crisis.

At a summit of heads of State, held in Yaoundé on 24 and 25 June, significant outcomes were adopted, paving the way for strengthened subregional cooperation and reinforced interregional cooperation and coordination between ECCAS, the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) and the Gulf of Guinea Commission.

153. The Committee encouraged member States to implement the multilateral regional cooperation agreement to combat trafficking in persons, especially women and children, in West and Central Africa, which was concluded in 2006 between ECCAS and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

UNOCA participated in the drafting of three key documents which were adopted at the meeting, namely, the ECCAS/ECOWAS Political Declaration on Illicit Maritime Activities in the Gulf of Guinea; a memorandum of understanding between ECCAS, ECOWAS and the Gulf of Guinea Commission; and a code of conduct for the three entities.

It highlighted actions taken to secure the vital interests at sea of Gulf of Guinea States that were members of ECCAS, including the holding of joint technical meetings between ECCAS, the Economic Community of West African States, the Gulf of Guinea Commission and other relevant actors.

On 5 June, the chiefs of institutions of the Gulf of Guinea Commission, ECCAS and ECOWAS met in Yaoundé and endorsed the additional protocol to the memorandum of understanding between ECCAS, ECOWAS and the Gulf of Guinea Commission relating to the organization and functioning of centre.

The Committee advocated strengthened interactions between ECCAS and other subregional organizations through the invitation of the latter, if necessary, to meetings organized under the aegis of the Committee and ECCAS, and vice versa.
