95. The European Union, through the Political Directorate and with the support of Switzerland and the United States of America, has helped to achieve progress in the political dialogue and the implementation of the Comprehensive Ceasefire Agreement between the Government and FNL.

One of the final contributions of ONUB to the peace process was supporting the negotiations between the Government and FNL, which, under the auspices of the Regional Peace Initiative and the South African Facilitation, led to the signing of the Agreement of Principles towards Lasting Peace, Security and Stability in Burundi in June, as well as the comprehensive ceasefire agreement in September.

24. The cessation of armed conflict in Burundi between the Government and FNL and the implementation of both the political and military aspects of a possible comprehensive agreement between the Government and FNL would constitute a benchmark, along with full respect for constitutional provisions such as power-sharing arrangements by the Government and all political actors in the country.
