The joint United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)/IMO Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Maritime Liens and Mortgages and Related Subjects (JIGE) has been reviewing the provisions of the 1952 International Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules Relating to the Arrest of Seagoing Ships.

– Montreal Protocol No. 4 to amend the Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules Relating to International Carriage by Air, signed at Warsaw on 12 October 1929, as amended by the Protocol done at The Hague on 28 September 1955 (1975), entered into force on 14 June 1998: 40;

The work on that draft Convention was completed by the Group at its ninth session in December 1996, and the Group recommended to the IMO Council and to the Trade and Development Board of UNCTAD that the United Nations General Assembly be requested to convene a diplomatic conference to consider and adopt a convention on Certain Rules Relating to the arrest of seagoing ships on the basis of the draft articles prepared by the Group.

245. The draft articles of the new convention (LEG/MLM/42-JIGE(IX)/5) to be considered by UNCTAD are a result of the review of the 1952 International Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules Relating to the Arrest of Seagoing Ships undertaken by the joint UNCTAD/IMO Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Maritime Liens and Mortgages and Related Subjects (JIGE).
